Hello! You’re only here because we gave you a link (probably). And because you’re likely a family member, you know we started this project two years ago. (2024.) Hahaha…..

One day we’ll get around to publishing an abridged version of all of these letters… one day… on, like, some online publishing thingy….. We-dk.

But for now, please enjoy old school website publishing. :D (We learned a bit of html for you!!! Squarespace who?)

For those uninitiated to this project, we (M&M) inherited a box of letters sent by our (paternal) grandparents to each other during our grandfather’s deployment in the Korean War. HUNDREDS of letters. Mert was crazy and sometimes wrote more than once per day.

We spent a solid six months in 2024 transcribing all them (i.e. typing up handwritten (cursive) letters). (They don’t really teach cursive in school anymore, did you know?) (We learned, but kids younger than us didn’t.) (For six months, our friends would ask, “What’s new with you?” And we would just say, “More letters.”) Along with typing them up, we scanned the individual letters as they exist. They will not be uploaded as they exist now because they need some work. :(

Sometimes you will see an extra letter in between the usual ones. They are from various friends and family that sent letters to Mert while in Korea that we also happened to inherit. (Shout out to Dick Knowlton. All time favorite letter. Funny guy.)

Also! Content warning! Read at your own risk. As you have probably gotten this link directly from us, these were probably your grandparents, or parents, or maybe you’re one of the older great-grandchildren. Well, you guys, dear beloved cousins, our grandparents had sex (!) and really uninspired nicknames for their genitalia. There is also usage of racial slurs in these letters, as well as a general “of the time” attitude towards other races. These letters also include: human and animal death. A dog will die. Jane will have kittens killed. And war, of course, happens.

Please do more than a cursory read-through. We spent a lot of time on this.
